Elevators and lifts are complex systems that involve hydraulics, electrics and engineering components and, as with any mechanical system, sometimes there can be issues that prevent the elevator from doing its intended job. Whether you have a goods elevator, a passenger lift or a platform elevator — we have an experienced team of lift engineers on hand should you encounter any problems.
Elevator problems come in many ways, some more complicated than others. Luckily for you, our engineers are able to deal with and fix your problems no matter how big or small they are. Here are some of the most common lift issues you may come across.
Power failures can be caused by a number of things, often they’re out of the property manager’s control and require an engineer call out. Whilst many lifts will have backup power systems in place should the primary power fail, it’s essential to get the issue sorted as soon as possible.
It is also a legal requirement in the UK for lifts to be fitted with emergency communications devices, if your communication system isn’t functioning properly, it’s crucial to get it fixed.
Another common issue people may face is the elevator door sticking and struggling to open. This can be caused by a number of reasons and it’s always best to call an engineer out to see what has occurred. When passengers come face to face with the issue, they often try pressing whatever buttons they can or even trying to pull the doors apart, this isn’t recommended and can make things worse.
In this situation, the best thing you can do is stay calm. As a passenger, you should press the emergency button and communicate with whoever is on the other end of the call. As a business, if you are on the other end of the call, you should inform the passengers that engineers are on the way, to stay calm and not press any buttons.
As lifts get older and get used more, they’re susceptible to general wear and tear. This is more common on elevators that have been in use for a few years with little servicing and maintenance.
Should you hear any unusual sounds coming when the lift is in use or the elevator is moving unusually, you should call out an engineer immediately to review the problems that the lift may be encountering. The most common issue when a lift is moving unnaturally or making unusual noises is loose or worn components and bearings.
If you’re experiencing an unpleasant smell, it may be a sign of oil contamination. With lifts that have been in use for many years, small particles may fall away and contaminate the motor oil. This can cause an odour from the motor and can also cause the lift to struggle to move up and down.

Here at Paragon Elevators, we have a team of elevator installers and service technicians who can help solve any of your elevator issues. Here’s how the team here at Paragon can help with the smooth running of your elevator.
Lift servicing is a legal requirement to ensure it’s safe and efficient. As a general guide, a regular passenger lift should be serviced at least twice a year and a high-volume passenger lift should be serviced around every two months. High-volume lifts are usually installed in more demanding environments, carry more weight and get used much more frequently, for example, in airports, hospitals and hotels.
Regular lift servicing means that potential issues can be found and fixed before they become a disruptive problem — it’s also cheaper to get a potential issue fixed than it is to get a problem fixed! Our team of elevator technicians can service your lift to ensure it is up to industry standards.
Some problems are completely out of your hands and can occur within the blink of an eye. If this is the case, it’s extremely important to get the problem fixed in a quick and efficient manner.
