Whether they’re in a museum or gallery, a retail store or a restaurant — commercial lifts are all around us and are extremely helpful. But, with so many types of commercial elevators available, which is best suited for you? As a nationwide elevator company in Hull, we’re here to help you find the answer.
There are three main types of commercial elevators on the market — hydraulic elevators, traction elevators and machine room-less (MRL) elevators.
Hydraulic elevator systems tend to have a fluid-driven piston that is mounted inside of a cylinder to lift the cab. They work by pressurising hydraulic fluid with an electric pump and forcing it into a cylinder. The pressure that is created from this pushes a piston that moves the elevator upwards. This process is reversed to lower the elevator. Hydraulic elevators are typically found in low-rise buildings that are no more than 5 stories.
Traction elevators use traction steel ropes or belts to raise and lower the cab. Traction elevators are faster than hydraulic elevators and can also travel longer vertical distances, this makes them favourable for mid to high-rise buildings.

Machine room-less elevators are elevators that do not require a machine room and work by utilising a gearless traction machine located in the hoistway. These can be both hydraulic and traction elevators. This type of elevator helps you create more space in your building and requires less energy to operate.
When it comes to actually purchasing a commercial lift, there are many different styles to consider, some are more suited for unique situations.
As the name suggests, passenger elevators are used for the primary reason of transporting passengers from one floor to another. You will typically find passenger elevators in car parks, gyms and leisure centres. The size and shape of passenger elevators can vary depending on where it is fitted.

Freight elevators are designed to withstand tough environments and carry heavy loads. Service elevators are designed to transport both freight and passengers, they are essentially elongated passenger elevators and are most often found in buildings such as hospitals, hotels and apartment buildings. Service elevators must meet all the code requirements for passenger elevators whilst also applicable codes for a freight loading elevator.
